Perez says younger people don’t watch a whole 90 minutes

Or something like that. I find that hard to believe of anyone who is a fan of football. But I’m an ageing bloke. Is this true?

If UEFA really want to gauge how popular (all) their CL games are they should offer them all individually at a flat rate PPV price. No "packages", no "special offers", no discounts of any sort.

Clubs will soon modify their aps to do any bulk selection for their fans for somebody who wants to buy viewing rights to every match their club is involved in, so no need to "help the customer decide" on that front.

Totally agree. Interesting on sky news am Arsenal fan said their last season at Highbury they won the League. Nothing since. Proof that chasing the money doesn't guarantee the success on the pitch.

The main 2 complaints are that there are too many games and fans are not watching (cherry-picking) the ones they do watch.

Just because a CL game is being broadcast, that doesn't mean it's being watched by a big enough audience to justify the sponsor's outlay - or watched by anyone at all.

You've hit the nail here with the FA Cup. The 3rd round generates a buzz, an anticipation, as do subsequent rounds.

Maybe a way to distribute the money from a knock-out competition more evenly might be the solution. Players get the kudos for winning, clubs get the cash for just taking part.

I'm sure all us fans would prefer it but as you know Mike it's all about money, and the more games the more money. Plus UEFA wouldn't dare risk Barca v Real Madrid in the first round would they. So the only way they could do it would be to seed it so the big clubs don't meet each other till later. It is the best format though as the long lasting interest in our FA Cup shows. You can get Burton Albion v Man United in round 3 or Liverpool v Man United. Or it did have long lasting interest until clubs put second strings out.

I see Klopp has moaned about all the extra games the proposed new CL format will bring.

Why the fuck doesn't one or more of these "Big 6" managers suggest going back to a simple European knock-out competition as a way to reduce the total number of games?

The more these ESL clubs tear each other to pieces the better. If they end up not trusting each other the less chance there is of not risking grouping together again. Still think the PL need to put forward rule a rule change outlining stiff penalties for any future breakaway attempts. Any club who doesn't vote for it you know they have plans to try it again.

There's a shock. Who would have thought it? All this was merely an exercise to get Barca and Real back to the top of the food chain without having to do it on the pitch.

Most of the 12 would just have been chewed up and spat out.

Exactly. Why is the world cup so special and such a big deal? It's only once every four years and you see matches you'll never normally see. A top European national side taking on a top South American national side with something at stake is a rare event.

If they changed it to once every two years (I know they won't in reality because of the Euros) then it would lose so much of it's impact.

International tournament football is exciting because it's not an everyday thing. Too much of it makes it completely unspecial.

The ESL would have a honeymoon period for probably a couple of years and then it just gets meaningless and stale because it's the same thing all the time and with no relegation there's no jeopardy. Yes there's the token 'five guest teams' but they'll just get walloped in every single game they play. Boring as shit.

It's a short term 'fix' to a problem that doesn't even exist IMO. Or if it exists, then this is absolutely not the way to go about it. Levelling the playing field is the way to make it exciting.

I'm betting that a straight knock-out, even over two legs would focus more people's attention on a game than virtually anything else.
